Sitting on the floor of Wat Bang Nam Chon Temple School a few weeks ago, surrounded by excited young students, I was brought back to my early school days. As the children threw themselves heart and soul into the activities, I gazed around the classroom and soaked up the sense of wonder.

What is ‘Practical Magic’? No, I’m not talking about the 1998 film starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman. I’m talking about the transformative power of Practical Arts studies in a hospitality education. The Practical Arts are a keystone of the world-famous Swiss-style hospitality education model.

Naureen Ahmed is the founder of Inspiring Women in Hospitality, an organisation whose aim is to share the stories of inspirational women within the hospitality industry.
