Active Learning for the 21^st Century

Imagine a traditional, typical classroom setting. Conjure up the classroom in your mind. What do you see? Probably, it’s something like this… A lecturer stands in front of the class. Maybe the instructor has a chalkboard behind them. Perhaps it’s a white board or projector screen, but it’s the same idea. The lecturer stands in front of the class and talks. The students listen and take notes. Some of them struggle to stay awake. Maybe they watch the clock ticking.

For years, Switzerland has been recognised as the hub of hospitality education. Students with dreams of becoming hoteliers flock to its mountain towns and lakeside cities to learn the art and business of hospitality at Swiss hotel schools with their time-tested curricula. In recent years, a new generation of budding hoteliers have discovered another beautiful location offering a similarly impeccable education in the concepts, commercial strategies and fine skills of hospitality management. In contrast to the snowy slopes of Switzerland, this newer hub of hospitality education offers a tropical backdrop. Yes, Thailand.

Over the weekend, on the 11th of March 2023, the Asian Institute of Hospitality Management in academic association with Les Roches was honoured to host the very first graduation ceremony to celebrate the eight students that graduated with a Certificate in International Hotel Administration.

What comes to mind when you think of Switzerland? Luxurious watches? Fine chocolates? Historic banks? Snow-covered ski slopes? As a Swiss national working in Asia, I’m proud of all these claims to fame, but one Swiss signature is closer to my heart than all the others: Switzerland has a reputation for being home to some of the best hotel schools in the world. Today, I’m excited to discuss the Swiss model of education in hospitality and hotel management and where it can be found in Asia. At AIHM (the Asian Institute of Hotel Management in Academic Association with Les Roches), we’re committed to bringing this world-renowned model to Thailand to benefit other parts of Asia and to provide our students with the highest quality of education, training and support.

Student News: Launching the ‘Inside Scoop’

AIHM is proud to attract and foster some of the brightest young minds in the hospitality field. We enjoy a front-row seat, a look into the talents and drive of the future leaders of the hospitality industry. As AIHM’s students take the first steps of their journeys, our faculty and associates are happy to play a role in their development and hospitality education. We get to watch students put their new knowledge into practice and apply it to their own ambitions. A prime example of this sense of initiative, second-year AIHM student Andrew Rohrbach has recently launched his own website called the Inside Scoop of Hospitality. We’re already enjoying his first articles and look forward to many more to come.

Looking Back on Bangkok Riverside Fest 2023

Bangkok Riverside Fest 2023 drew to a triumphant close, having attracted a record number of attendees. One component of its success: the dedicated support of AIHM’s hard-working hospitality students coupled with the expert direction of Programme Lead Ishaan Dargan and teachers Gavin Tiffin and Tip Tirakanirunkul. AIHM’s student ambassadors wined and dined VIPs whilst showcasing the skills of exceptional customer service for special guests. They shared the latest trends in responsible hospitality at Sustainability Kiosks. Behind the scenes at the performance stages, they helped keep things running smoothly. At a variety of stations throughout the festival, students put their events management studies and newly acquired skills and knowledge of practical arts subjects into practice.
