AIHM’s hospitality management students enjoy internships in some of the world’s most exclusive hotels and innovative resorts. On the AIHM Higher blog, we’ve shared internship stories from the Maldives and student experiences in the United Arab Emirates. Today, we turn our attention closer to home. Back in the Middle Ages, a book was a rare, priceless object. The art of bookmaking required a team of highly skilled scribes, illuminators and binders. Each book cost a small fortune. Only the wealthiest members of society were able to own books, and even then, the number of books you were able to own or gain access to was limited by practical considerations. As of September 2023, the internet contains 4.3 billion pages of content, accessible to virtually everyone. Those Medieval Europeans would consider today’s wide-sweeping access to knowledge an embarrassment of riches. But knowledge does not equal understanding.

As a member of the first cohort of the Asian Institute of Hospitality Management in Academic Association with Les Roches, I’ve been able to benefit from a wealth of opportunities during my studies here. AIHM is home to students from all over the world. We’re a small school where we all get to know each other. Despite our small size, we have students from over ten different cultures and nationalities. Of course, there are many students from Thailand, but a lot of us come from across the region and all around the world.

Each faculty member brings their own talents, background, passion and expertise to their teaching. Learn how they became the teachers they are today. AIHM’s hospitality management curriculum takes students on an exhilarating journey. One of its highlights: the Practical Arts semester. A hands-on exploration of hotel operations, the Practical Arts course invites students to experience a variety of hotel areas from the work of the baristas to housekeeping to events management studies.

Some people you meet radiate energy and inspiration. They have a smile that’s contagious. They walk in a room, and it instantly brightens. Samantha Lauver-Marion, AIHM’s Head of Student Engagement, is a shining example!

A career in hospitality can take you around the world. Just ask Tip Tirakanirunkul, AIHM instructor in the Practical Arts. Originally from Thailand, she began her higher education locally before pursuing culinary training and a successful pastry career in Europe. Journeying full circle, she returned to her home country several years ago to share her hospitality expertise at universities in Thailand.
