Beyond the Walls: Enrichment at AIHM

AIHM’s Head of Student Engagement, Samantha Lauver-Marion, sat down with HAFIDH AL BUSAIDY the General Manager at Niyama Private Islands Maldives to chat about careers in hospitalityand theAIHM scholarship for Maldivians in honour of Dr. Maniku. This competitive full scholarship is available to Maldivian students who are interested in pursuing a career in hospitality management.

Moving to university is one of the biggest moments in a person’s life. This experience is a chance for a young adult to explore their interests and develop a sense of independence. If your son or daughter is moving to attend AIHM or any other school of higher education, they’re probably a ball of excitement and nervous energy. At the same time, so are you!

“I am not confident.” “It is so difficult.” “I do not understand.” These are some of the most common sentences I hear when people talk about learning English.

I often ask people, “Do you speak English?”

“No, I do not,” comes the answer.  My reply: “Well you just understood me and answered in English!”

The Muay Thai orchestra plays its rhythmic music. The drummers create an entrancing beat. The resonant sound of the Thai oboe rises and falls hypnotically. The contenders prepare for battle. In one corner, we have Talent. In the opposite corner, Experience readies himself for the match. All through the stadium, spectators get ready to cheer their chosen contender. Moving abroad for the first time is one of the most exciting things you will ever do in your life. Every day is filled with new discoveries. You’ll see amazing new things, try incredible new foods and make wonderful new friends. The first weeks will feel like the adventure of a lifetime.

From private islands and tropical resorts to stunning city hotels and Michelin-starred restaurants, AIHM’s hospitality management students are exploring their passions and developing their professional skills on their most recent internships.

On Saturday, 15 April, future hospitality leaders from around the world came together at Avani+ Riverside Bangkok Hotel, where the AIHM campus is located, for a momentous occasion: the first big steps in their educational journey. AIHM’s Induction Weekend welcomed new and returning students with an array of activities and special events.

The word ‘hospitality’ brings to mind a variety of career options. In this service-oriented field, many students and young graduates aspire to climb the career ladder within hotels or to pursue a dream of running their own company, such as a restaurant, or to take on a leading role within their family business.

Active Learning for the 21^st Century

Imagine a traditional, typical classroom setting. Conjure up the classroom in your mind. What do you see? Probably, it’s something like this… A lecturer stands in front of the class. Maybe the instructor has a chalkboard behind them. Perhaps it’s a white board or projector screen, but it’s the same idea. The lecturer stands in front of the class and talks. The students listen and take notes. Some of them struggle to stay awake. Maybe they watch the clock ticking.
