How to Be Ready for University: A Warm Welcome and Some Honest Advice

Starting university is one of life’s great adventures. Whether you're studying close to home or thousands of miles away, it’s a leap into the unknown—and that’s part of the magic. At AIHM, we know that your academic journey is just one part of the picture. The transition can be exciting, overwhelming, joyful and a little bit scary—all at once. And that’s okay.
I’ve spent many years supporting students as they make these kinds of leaps into new schools, new cultures, new friend groups and new life stages. Here are a few gentle tips to help you be ready.
1. Prepare for Independence, Bit by Bit
University life brings a lot more independence than most students are used to. That doesn’t mean you have to do everything alone. It does mean learning to manage your time, take care of your space and advocate for yourself.
Try this:
Before you arrive, practice small things you may not be accustomed to—doing your own laundry, budgeting your money for a week, or cooking a few simple meals. These everyday skills go a long way toward helping you feel capable and confident.
2. Build a Support System Early
It can feel daunting to leave behind your old support system—friends, family, routines. One of the best parts of university life is discovering a new community. The key is to reach out early.
What helps:
Join clubs, attend social events, say yes to coffee invites. At AIHM, you’ll be part of a student enrichment club from day one, giving you instant access to new friends and shared experiences. It’s okay to miss people from home. It’s also okay to feel excited. Most people feel both so embrace the new.
3. Ask for Help
If there’s one thing I want every student to hear, it’s this: Asking for help is a strength. Whether it’s academic support, mental health resources or just someone to talk to, support is always available: you can take the first step.
Our promise:
At AIHM, we’re proud of our warm, inclusive community. You’ll find staff and faculty who genuinely care, and students who look out for each other. You’re never alone here. During your orientation, we’ll introduce you to some of the great resources available to you. Still got a question? A challenge you’re trying to overcome? Talk to me! That’s what I’m here for, and I love to help. Chances are I’ve helped many other students with similar questions.
4. Make Space for Self-Care
You can’t pour from an empty cup. With classes, assignments, and social life, it’s easy to burn out. The trick is to treat self-care as non-negotiable.
Top tips:
Sleep well, move your body, eat nourishing food and make time for things that bring you joy. Take breaks. Protect your peace. University is a time to learn. It can also be the most exciting period of your life. Don’t forget to make time to enjoy yourself, to practice your hobbies and to recharge when needed. This can be as small as a 10-minute study break or as big as a week-long island trip with your friends during the school break.
5. Keep an Open Mind
You’ll meet people from all over the world, encounter new ideas and maybe even discover a new version of yourself. That’s one of the most beautiful things about AIHM university—it expands your world.
If you’re studying abroad, embrace the culture shock. Moving to a new country is exciting, and it can also take time to adjust. That’s completely normal. Learn about Thai culture. Bangkok is international and vibrant, and understanding local customs and basic Thai phrases will help you feel more at home. Try new things. From street food to festivals to day trips, immersing yourself in your new environment will enrich your experience.
Even if Bangkok is your hometown, AIHM is a new environment filled with people from around the world. At AIHM, you’ll experience Bangkok through fresh eyes. Say ‘yes’ to new opportunities!
A gentle reminder:
You’re here to learn, explore, grow and change. Stay curious. Stay kind and trust that you’ll find your way.
